Medium utilization
- Multiple packets can be on the ring resulting in high medium utilization
Medium access fairness
- No station can monopolize the ring
When the ring is not loaded:
- Stations can transmit at will
When the ring is close to being saturated
- Station must accumulate enough inter-packet gaps to free up space on the transit buffer in order to send its packet
- In effect, to send a b-bit packet, a station must accumulate b-bits of empty space
