Slotted Rings
The ring is slotted into fixed size packets
Several frames can be in transit simultaneously
Each slot has an empty/full bit
- If the passing frame is full, the station relays it
- If the passing frame is empty, the station changes it to full and inserts its frame
Typically the number of packets is small
To increase the number of packets, delays are introduced, e.g., using shift registers
Slotted rings need to trade-off simplicity for bandwidth utilization
