Multiplexing

• Multiplexing is a way to share a link among multiple senders and receivers

• Two key issues:

• Arbitration (for the sender) — when to send

  • Implemented by a multiplexer
  • Combination of traffic from several links onto one

• Addressing (for the receiver) — when to receive

  • Implemented by a demultiplexer
  • Separation of traffic from one input link onto several output links
  • Multiplexed links, “sub-channels”, have addresses
