Reading Lamp
Justin Adams

I work for the MIT Environment, Health and Safety Office on pollution prevention (P2) on the MIT campus. P2 includes many different ingredients, but the goal is to create a sustainable living and working environment at MIT. A large part of my responsibilities are developing waste reduction strategies, especially for hard to recycle and reuse items such as books.

The lamp is a simple furniture piece that uses the whole book and a large number of books, both important. The lamp materials, the shade,
and electrical parts, were found abandoned on a MIT loading dock. The shade was made by cutting shapes from the covers of the children's books used in the base. I then covered the shade with colored paper and sealed and glued the entire thing with a non-toxic adhesive that also seals.
