Listen state
- Scan for patterns, e.g., addresses, tokens
- Copy each bit to the station and retransmit
- Modify selected bits, e.g., to indicate packet reception
Transmit state
- Receive bits from station and retransmit
- Copy own packet to station for checking
- Buffer other packets
Bypass state
- Signals propagated past repeater with minimal delays
- Isolates faulty or inactive stations
