Muxing and flow control

• Flow control means buffering

• Buffers near the arbitration point

  • Reduces the round-trip time and hence
  • Reduces the size of the buffers

• Output buffering

  • Tolerates a larger round-trip time across the multiplexer
  • But the buffer may cost more because it has to accept traffic at the total bandwidth of all the inputs
