Kinds of Addresses (Names)
The following kinds of addresses occur in a distributed computing environment
Example: Telephony
- Descriptive name: “CALL JOSIAH” in a voice activated system
- Primitive name: “Prof. Josiah Carberry” in a telephone directory
- Address: “401-863-7647” (actually this is an “impure” name: it’s a hybrid having both primitive and addressing properties)
- Routing: Typically implicit, but can be partially specified in choosing a long distance carrier
