*** If you're reading this message and you're not taking 6.042,
*** then email me, etara@MIT.EDU, and I'll remove you from the list.

Recitation scheduling information has been updated again. Everyone who's
sent me (or 6042-staff) mail has been reassigned according to their
preferences. PLEASE check your section assignment. it's at

http://theory.lcs.mit.edu/classes/6.042/sections/students.html

If anyone can switch from another section into an 11--1 one, we would
greatly appreciate it -- it's to your advantage since there'll be fewer
people in your section and more opportunity to get your questions
answered!

And just to clarify:
(1) it doesn't matter what section you went to last week,
or who you handed your problem set in to, or even what
anyone (including me) told you about what section you're
in. YOUR OFFICIAL SECTION IS WHAT'S LISTED ON THE WEB PAGE,
and that's where we expect you to go.

(2) The number beside your name _doesn't_ indicate the time! It's the
section number. To see what time/room it is, click on "Return to
Recitation Information"

(3) Again, if you have a conflict with your assigned section, email me.

thanks.

we just got a new TA for 6.042 (Mark Roh),
which means that we need to do some recitation
rescheduling in order to keep sections balanced.

if you want to move from your assigned section
(which is on the web page), send me email stating
what section you're currently assigned to, what
time you'd like to have recitation, AND what other
times you don't have conflicts with.

EVERYONE please check their official assignment on
the web page, since that's what i'm basing scheduling
changes on. if you're not officially assigned to the
section that you'd like to be in, send me email, even
if you've sent email concerning changes in the past.

thanks

In the example given in PSet4, Prob 3b: the set of bounded moves
should be
     {(1,1),(1,2),(2,1), (0,3), (0,2),(0,1),(0,0),(1,0),(2,0),(3,0)}.
(The last 7 points above, with a 0 coordinate, were omitted in the
original handout.) And the unbounded moves in the example are the points
with at least one zero-coordinate, except the 7 above.

Hi Class,

In problem 4f of PS4, you must assume that that there are an equal
number of men and women. Here is the revised wording:

"Suppose that the number of women and the number of men are the same
and that no person is unacceptable to more than one person of the
opposite sex. Show that the protocol leads to a stable marriage set
where there are no more than two bachelors of the same sex."

and the other 3-5. if anyone from sections at
9-11, 10-12, 1-3, or 2-4 can switch into either
time, please send me email. (it's definitley to
your advantage to be in a smaller section, since your

want to refer to it when doing Problems 5--7 on Pset6.

quiz solutions are now available on the web page
and will be handed out in lecture today.

i know some of you are interested in getting some
of your problems regraded, so here's the deal:

look at the solutions first. if you still think
you deserve more points than we gave you, talk to
your TA. it's up to each individual TA whether he
(or she) looks at it or gets the grader of the problem
to look at it again. (but talk to your TA first, before
contacting the grader of the problem in question)

and please remember that we try to grade as fairly as
possible. even if you think we took off alot of points
for a specific mistake, chances are that we took off the
same for everyone who made that or a similar mistake, so
to be fair, we won't give you more points if you have this
type of complaint.

we overlooked a correct solution to Problem 6,
part a when grading the quiz, so, if you showed
that the limit of the ratio of the two functions
approaches 1 as n approaches infinity, make sure
you bring your quiz back to your TA to be regraded.
sorry for the oversight.

PS8 Problem 4(c) has been replaced by (c) and (d) below. Here is the
entire revised problem:

-------------------------------------------------
   Problem 4. [15 points]
Find partial fraction decompositions for the following functions.

   (a) 8x/(4x^2 - 1)

   (b) (x^4 - x^3 - 6x^2 + 6x + 7)/(x^2 + 3x + 2)

   (c) (Revised 4/10/98) Regarding the function of part (a) as an (ordinary)
generating function, what is its 17th coefficient?

   (d) (Revised 4/10/98) Regarding the function of part (b) as an(ordinary)
generating function, what are its first four coefficients?
-------------------------------------------------

If you've already done the old part (c), that's OK: you needn't do the new
parts.

Also, the reading assignment for the PSet was omitted. It is:
Rosen Section 4.6; Rosen Appendix 3; 6.042 Fall 97, Notes for Lecture 17.

The complete revised Problem Set 8 is on the course web page.

The Final is CLOSED BOOK -- unlike the quiz. You will NOT be allowed to
bring your own crib sheet. However, we have written a review sheet for
you, namely,
HANDOUT 60 will be attached to the Final as an Appendix.
It is now on the course web page. Also look at the web page for further
info about review material and sessions.

Good luck with your review.

Date: Tue, 19 May 1998 23:50:58 EDT
From: "Mark C. Roh" <mroh@MIT.EDU>

If you're preparing for Friday's final by studying previous semesters'
practice finals, you ought to know that Question 5 of the Spring 1997
practice final has a few typos in it. Question 5 consists of four T/F
questions.

The first reads "... f_a(x)=axp"
when it should read, "... f_a(x)=ax (mod p)"

The third T/F question reads
"If a^(-1)b exists, then so does b^(-1)a."
It should state,
"If a^(-1) (mod b) exists, then so does b^(-1) (mod a)."

The other two parts need no correction.

A corrected version of the problem is available on this semester's
6.042 home page.

I apologize for the error.

Mark

Before you go on vacation, I would like to tell you that the official grades will
be available next Wednesday. You can email 6042-meyer@theory.lcs.mit.edu starting
next Wednesday for your official grade. Your TA will probably have your final
score on Sunday, and you may ask him/her to get an idea how you do in the class
in general.

Lastly, the solution of the exam is on the webpage. This would be the last handout
we give out.

Anyway, good luck to you, and have a nice summer!

Edmond
