Hi,

My name is Ovidiu Marina. In tutorial today I found out the quiz next week will
be at 7-9 on Wednesday. If this will be the case, I cannot make it since I have
a class during that entire slot. What alternate times are there for the quiz?

Second, I would like to change tutorial sections from Tues. 7pm to Monday at 2
pm (2B , with Terry, since 2A, with Dimitri is somewhat crowded).

Thank you,

Ovidiu Marina

As far as i know, i'll be here over spring break to make up the test 1. I get
back sunday, so i'd appreciate a day or two to get my act together before the
test (It's nationals, and our team is poised well to place, so i'll probably
be on edge a little).

Also, I've mentioned this to the TA's, but noone's said anything, but it'd
be awfully nice for the problem sets, if we had access to your "official"
class notes, as they're in more detail and meticulous than some people
(i.e. me) can take in class. for instance, lecture 6's notes came out
today, despite it containing information pertenant to the last problem
set (though minus the algorithm proving techniques). And for this week,
no notes are available yet.

Thanks for your time and consideration,

John Novak

Subject: out of town dates

Hi there. I'm a grad student in the 6.042 class, finishing up my last math
class for the Master's degree. However, I'm also on the MIT's Varsity Pistol
Team. I have a match against the Coast Guard Academy this friday and will
not be able to go to recitation, and want to know how to make that up.

More importantly, Nationals this year are unfortunately being held the week
before spring break out at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado. We leave
the tuesday before spring break and return the sunday spring break starts.
Turning in the problem set monday before I go will not be a problem for me.
However, our first test is the wednesday before spring break (after I
leave). Now, this is also my only graded class, and hence my entire term GPA
is on it, so I really don't want to mess this up, so I'm starting the ball
on this as early as possible to find a way to set this up--giving it to me
early or late or mailed. I know official MIT policy is to accomadate student
atheletes, but I didn't want to irk off the people giving me my only grade
for the term by telling them this a few days in advance and they had to
solve this for me.

Thanks for your time. Just trying to get this taken care of early so I don't
get any strikes against me.

John Novak

I talked to you after lecture about a tutorial I missed because
I had a doctor's appointment. You said it was ok but I should get
you/TA a photocopy of a note from the doctor. Apparently, according
to the doctor, the Dean's office does not allow doctors to write excuses
for students since they would end up writing excuses all day long.
However, the doctor says that you can call anytime to verify that I
saw her. Her name is Lorraine Toher and her phone number is 253-4496.
I hope this is not too much of an inconvenience.

Thanks

I have a 6.001 test on the 19th at 7:00 also. So I will need to take the
test at a make-up time.

Thanks

If you mean 9-11, that is fine. Even though a lot more tiring ;)

(5-7 would be better, but I would bet you'd find more people with conflicts
then).

Hi,

I was wondering if there was going to be any conflict review session.
6.002 happens to have its midterm review in the same time slot as the planned
review for 6.042, of 7-9 Monday.

Hi, I'm sorry I'm so late in getting in touch, but I'd like to take
the 6.042 conflict exam - I have a conflict with 6.001, and as it
stands I'd have to take 18.03, 6.001 and 6.042 exams one after
another. I also have a 6.002 test on Thursday 7-9... again, I'm
sorry for the tardiness and I hope I didn't leave things too late,
I've just been snowed up with work.

Thanks,

Ben

One of David Gupta's students, Julian Orbanes, would like to switch
into Terry's 3PM tutorial from David's 3PM. If terry's tutorial is
not currently too crowded, please make the switch. 1PM with terry is
also good. Please notify terry, jules and david once the switch has
been made. Please notify me if the switch cannot be made.

Hello,

My name is Pedro Araujo and I have a little problem. I have a conflict
with the test this Wednesday. I have another test for 6.001 at the same
time (Wed. 7-9pm in Walker). The 6.001 test is also being held from 5-7pm
but I will not be able to make that test. I am scheduled to cook dinner
for Spanish House at that time. I was wondering if there is a conflict
exam I can take.

I am currently trying to make arrangements so that I won't have to cook
on wed. but I don't know if that will work out. If it does, then I will
be able to take the 6001 test from 5-7 and the 6042 test from 7-9. However
I would like to know if I can make up the test, just in case it doesn't
work out.

Thanks,

Peter.

I think I'll just skip my class on wednesday and make the regular exam...

Given that I have an 002 exam on thursday 7-9...

That should make your scheduling/etc easier.

Im sorry, I must have confused you (as you well know I took the test today
in your room), When I emailed you about the conflict test, I was asking
about the second test and whether or not there would be a conflict exam. So
please keep me in mind for the conflict exam for the next test.

I taked to you after class yesterday about not being able to make the exam
in two weeks, but I just wanted to write to you so everything was nice and
formal and you had my name and all that. Also, it turns out I'll be getting
back a bit later than I thought.

Anyway, I'm vanishing for seattle on wednesday afternoon around 5:30, and
will catch a plane back from seattle around 1 or 2. However, that is (which
I forgot when I talked to you) around 4 or 5 EST, so I probably wouldn't be
back to Boston until at least 9PM, which makes taking the exam on Friday
rather difficult.

However, since I'm not planning on dropping the class, I am completely at
your disposal as to when I should take the test. If you want me to take it
the Saturday morning after the exam, I can do that, or Monday morning after
the exam, or wednesday morning of the exam, or whatever.

I really appreciate your flexibility on this matter, and I am open to any
solution which includes:
1. My taking the exam
2. My flying to seattle for a couple days

Hey, maybe I could solve this planning problem with antichains for the next
problem set, and then tell you what the best solution would be..... :)

Thanks,
Aidan

this, but I just found out that I have to be at home for this

I am currently planning on being back by Wednesday, but since I am away
this will prevent me from attending the review lectures, and from studying
as much as I'd like to. Please allow me to take the make up exam if at
all possible. Thanks in advance.

I sent this earlier to professor Karger and got no answer, so I'm sending
it to you to see what I should do. I really feel sick and couldn't possibly
perform optimally on the test.
---

Hi there, Professor Karger. I've gotten pretty ill over the past few days
with some sort of stomach bug. I've been to the med center, and they said
that I should just take over the counter medecine and wait, but it's really
pretty distracting and painful. I was wondering if it would be possible to
take the test at the makeup time tomorrow, when I might be feeling better.

Thanks,
John

Subject: 6.042 grades
Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 15:34:57 EDT

Hi, there are some errors on the grade report I received:

****note, I have not received problem sets 6, 7, and 9 back yet, so I am
unable to show you all my problem set scores.****

1.
-----
it shows I have a 0 for PS9. I did the problem set and turned it in,
but I haven't received it back yet, so I'm unable to show it to you. I
had assumed that the problem set hadn't been returned yet since it's a
pretty recent one.

2.
----
I am shown having a 41 on PS7. If this score is out of 100, then I
suspect it is a typo because I did all the problems, and I don't think
that I missed that many points on it. But, I haven't recieved it back,
so I can' see what I really got.

3.
----
It shows that I didn't attend tutorial #1, which I did attend.

4.
----
I also had a question: why are the bonus questions included in the
scores the problem sets are out of? For example, my pset says "70/70"
for PS3, but it says "70/80" on the grade sheet. Will those bonus
questions be counted against us?

That's all--please let me know if you can clear this up. Thanks.
