Antichess Final Tournament

The Antichess Tournament will be held on Tuesday, May 16 at 5:30pm in the Kiva room (32-G449) of the Stata Center. It will last about two hours. Pizza will be served; therefore, please RSVP by Monday, May 15 by adding your name to the wiki at: http://scripts.mit.edu/~cananian/6170/index.php?title=Antichess_Tournament_RSVP. You are welcome to bring guests—please note the number of guests on the wiki.

The Antichess Tournament will consist of two sub-tournaments, one for Antichess and one for Antiking Antichess. Each sub-tournament will consist of several rounds of single-elimination matches until a single player remains. Each match will consist of a single game. The team with the higher tournament seed (see below) will chose the its color and will win draws. (A draw occurs when players repeat the same moves three times in a row or when 50 moves occur without a piece being taken or a pawn moved.)

Once the sub-tournament winners have been determined, assuming the sub-tournaments were won by different teams, there will be a final match to determine the overall 6.170 chess champion. The final match will consist of up to three games. The first game will be standard antichess where the antiking antichess champion chooses its color. The second game will be antiking antichess and the standard antichess champion will choose its color. If the match is tied after two games, a third tie-breaker match will be played. The team with the higher combined tournament seed will have the option to either choose the game (antichess or antiking antichess) or its color. The other team will choose the remaining option. The winner of the final match will crowned the 6.170 Grand Master and will be awarded a modest prize.

Seeding Tournament

Before the final tournament, the staff will hold two seeding tournaments: one for antichess and one for antiking antichess. The seeding tournaments will consist of playing each program against one another both as white and black. During the seeding tournament, a team receives 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.

The seeding tournament will be used for determining the initial bracket for the final tournament as well as breaking ties in the final tournament. Depending on the number of participants, some high-seeded teams may receive byes in the opening round.

Game Specifics

During each game, each player will be given 4 minutes of time to play, subject to modification due to necessity on day of game.

IMPORTANT: In the event that one player makes an invalid move, that player forfeits the match.
