6.170 Spring 2001 lottery
As was the case last year, it may prove necessary to limit enrollment
in 6.170, Laboratory in Software Engineering, this coming spring. The
purpose of this limitation is to balance registration between fall and
spring terms so that the Department can adequately staff the subject in
both terms. It is a step that we take reluctantly, and only when
clearly necessary. We do not anticipate the need for a lottery in
the fall term.
Here is some information that may help make the process go more
smoothly for all concerned.
- Limitations, if necessary, will be based SOLELY ON PREREGISTRATION;
Students who wish to take 6.170 in the spring of 2001 MUST preregister
via WEBSIS.
- Preregistration opens on December 1 and closes on December 29, 2000.
- Students should NOT wait until the last minute to preregister, lest
they encounter technical problems. Students should make sure to click
on the 'SUBMIT SUBJECTS' and 'FINISHED' buttons and to print out a
copy of their Preregistration Summary page. Any technical problems
with the preregistration process should be brought to the attention of
the Registrar's Office PRIOR TO December 29 by sending email to
websis-at-no.mitsis.mit.edu.
- It is anticipated that all juniors, seniors, and graduate students who
preregister will be accommodated. Any sophomores or freshmen who are
not accepted in the lottery are guaranteed places in 6.170 next year.
For purposes of the lottery, a student's class will be that in effect
on December 29.
- There will be no waiting list. Anticipating that a few students who
preregister will later find it necessary to drop out, we will accept
somewhat more students in the lottery than we expect to be able to
accommodate. Thus there will not be a follow-up lottery. Do not expect
the 6.170 staff to make exceptions.
- Students contemplating taking 6.170 should discuss their academic
plans with their advisors, and not preregister 'just in case' they
will later decide to take 6.170. If enough students take 6.170 in
the fall rather than the spring, a lottery may not be necessary, and
that would leave everyone happier.
