6.141 Laboratory Rules

The laboratories for this course are conducted in facilities with expensive and dangerous equipment. A small amount of common sense and thought will ensure the peaceful co-existence of several projects.

  • The robots can be dangerous. Safety first! Only use them as instructed. Keep in mind that instructions for using the machines are not limited to what is written in the handouts. When in doubt, ask your professors or lab assistants.
  • Only use the equipment assigned for your projects. Do not use the other equipment, unless you get permission.
  • Do not touch or move hardware that is not related to your project.
  • Do not cannibalize parts from anybody else's project.
  • Don't get hurt by messing with the robots.
  • Do not let strangers in the lab.
  • Keep the lab doors shut at all times. Do not prop the doors open.
  • Do not remove anything from the lab.
  • You are responsible for your guests in the lab. Do not leave them alone.
  • Do not let anyone rip or vandalize the lab.
  • You may not use the machines for anything other than robotics research. If you would like to use them for other purposes, you must inform me first.
  • Food is not allowed in the lab.
  • Food and drinks are not allowed on the challenge course.
  • Do not walk on the challenge course with messy shoes.
  • Do not use equipment from the labs adjacent to the challenge course unless you get permission.

    You are responsible for:
  • Safety. Do not touch other robots without permission. Do not stick your fingers into them and get electrocuted. Do not mess with the control programs of the robots so they screw up and hit someone else.
  • Security. Do not remove things from the lab. Do not allow, through action or inaction, others to take things away from the lab. Close the door when you leave. Report intruders. Supervise any guests you bring in the lab. Do not lend your access card to anyone. Do not reveal your password or share your account with anybody.
  • Scientific Courtesy. Other students are doing experiments in the lab. Hardware is delicate and fragile. If you touch it, you might mess up the calibration. In other words, leave other people's setups alone.
