PDF Files

All of the printable course materials are available in Adobe portable document format (PDF) files. To view and print PDF files, we recommend the free Acrobat Reader.

On some platforms, Acrobat Reader can also be configured as a web browser plug-in. However, reading pdf files using the plug-in on Windows machines has been crashing some versions of the Msft IE and Netscape browsers. This is a known incompatibility problem. There is a simple work-around: don't use the plug-in, namely, set Acrobat to open pdf files directly. For Adobe Acrobat 5.0, you can do this by:

  • opening the Acrobat Reader,
  • opening the edit > preferences > general menu,
  • under the "options" tab, unchecking "display PDF in browser".

See the Adobe Techdoc for more details.

Web Browsers

This website is designed using cascading style sheets. While Netscape 4 has some support for style sheets, it is buggy and incomplete. If you experience problems with this site using any version of Netscape 4, contact . As a temporary fix, you can turn off style sheets in the "Advanced" preference. Modern browsers support style sheets very well. Mozilla 0.9x and Netscape 6.2 are available for every major platform. For Windows and MacOS (9 and X) Internet Explorer 5.x is also available.
