Class Demonstration Gallery

In 6.042, we do a number of fun demonstrations to show how the mathematics we study in class can be applied to "real world" situations. As the term progresses, we will place photos of our in-class demos and links to demonstration applets here.

Magic Trick, 10/30/2002

Magician Min lets his assistant Georgi to ask five students to select one card each from a shuffled deck of 52 cards. Georgi then asks 4 students to announce their cards. Min thinks for a while and correctly names the secret, fifth card!


CD Stacking, 10/16/02

Josh stacked enough CD cases to get the top one completely beyond the bottom one, but a more impressive stack was built last term: (Spring '02 pictures)

Dilworth Chains and Antichains, 09/20/2002

Students lining up according to increasing height and increasing order of age form a chain, while according to decreasing height and increasing order of age form an antichain.

In the lecture at 2:30pm, we have about 100 students, which form an antichain of size 12.

In the lecture at 4pm, we have about 50 students, which form an antichain of size 8.
